The creation story tells us that God created Adam from the dust.

Created from dust

God breathed the breath of life into Adam's nostrils, which is distinctly different from the creation story of the animals.

Breath of life

“I am a spirit who has a soul and lives in a body.” To the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus says that “God is Spirit” (John 4:24, NRSVUE). Being created in the image/likeness of God means that we are spirits.

God is spirit

God loves me and accepts me no matter what I do, whether I fail or succeed. His love is unconditional, and he only requires me to trust Him. How well I do has no bearing on how much He loves me. I am His, I am the beloved. I am already approved, no matter what the world or even my parents say or do.

Not rejected

Through human achievements in culture, arts, and science, we manifest the image of God in which we were created.

What is in your hand?

Problems in my own body create a point of access to people and places where I may never meet someone in life any other way.

Access

Looking back at the creation story, God gave Adam and Eve dominion over creation, also unique to humans compared to the rest of creation. We can partner with Him in carrying out His plans.

Partners

God is saying, “welcome home, son, welcome home, daughter, you belong here.” God is saying this to all who come to Him: “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest,” (Matthew 11:28-30, NRSVUE). Rest from searching, striving, and trying to belong.
